Mainland or free zone: which is easier for a UAE business bank account?
One of the most common questions we get before a licence is even issued: once the company exists, will a bank actually open an account for it?
It depends on the bank, not just the jurisdiction
Banks in the UAE apply their own compliance checks on top of whatever authority issued the licence, and a mainland or free zone licence does not by itself decide the outcome.
Four things banks look at
- Physical presence. A real, verifiable office address (not every virtual office package is accepted by every bank) and a working local phone line.
- Business activity. Some activities carry a higher money-laundering risk rating and get extra scrutiny regardless of jurisdiction.
- Owner's residency and source of funds. A resident shareholder with a clear banking history is usually a faster case than a fully offshore structure.
- Which free zone, specifically. Free zones are not interchangeable in a bank's eyes — some have stronger standing with local banks than others. Mainland companies are generally seen as the more local structure, and that can matter for day-to-day banking.
Neither mainland nor free zone is automatically the easier route. We assess this case by case, against your specific activity and residency status, before recommending a jurisdiction — rather than defaulting to one.
Office choice and Ejari
The office or virtual office you lease also gets its own tenancy contract registration (Ejari), and that choice feeds back into how a bank views the application — see our virtual office and Ejari guide for how the two fit together.
Asked every week.
Is a mainland company always easier to bank than a free zone company?
Not always — it depends on the activity, the bank, and the free zone chosen. Mainland is often more familiar to local banks, but several free zones bank just as easily for the right activity.
Does a virtual office stop a bank account from being approved?
It can with some banks, which is why the office/virtual office setup is part of what we assess before recommending a jurisdiction.
